Tesla Internship, Electronics Test & Automation
July 2026
Throughout all of May to August 2026, I interned at Tesla in Fremont, California in the Electronics Test and Automation department. This was an insane opportunity and I am so grateful for it because I learned a huge amount. It primarily involved Failure Analysis work on Autopilot car computers from the factory line. The tolerance for failure is pretty much zero because human lives depend on its reliable function, so any unit that fails during production was sent to our lab for thorough analysis. I debugged a number of mechanical, electrical and software issues that caused the units to fail and reported to the design engineering teams on what components were raising problems. It was hugely fulfilling work and my debugging skills significantly improved from the role. Towards the end of the internship, I started work on an automated test fixture for a revised power management product related to vehicle charging. I gained understanding of the hardware and produced a complete fixture design using mostly equipment that we had on hand already, saving considerable funds. I hope to learn more about power electronics soon and do more projects with them because I would have liked to have more fundamental knowledge on the topic.
